Semester Grade Calculator

Combine your term categories and find the final-exam score you still need.

Quick answer: Enter your semester categories with grades and weights to see your term grade, then switch to the final mode to find the exam score needed for the grade you want — both from the same syllabus numbers.

Standard formula: needed = (desired − current × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. The final weight is the share of the course grade the exam carries.

Weight of final
25%

Above 100% — that target is out of reach with this final alone. Either the grade needs bumping elsewhere or the target is unrealistic.

What is Semester Grade Calculator?

A semester grade calculator works on the syllabus, not the individual papers. Most courses define a set of weighted categories — homework, quizzes, projects, midterm, final — and the semester grade is the weighted average of those categories' scores. This tool has two modes: the first computes the resulting course grade from the category grades and weights you enter, and the second works backwards from your current grade to the score the final exam must deliver. Together they cover the two questions students ask at the end of a term: where do I stand, and what do I need?

Common Uses for Semester Grade Calculator

  • Check your standing before the semester's last assignments
  • Find the final-exam score needed to keep an A or a B
  • Model the effect of a heavier final exam weight
  • Verify the weighted grade shown in a course portal

The syllabus is the source of truth

Copy the category names from the syllabus and use its exact weights. Where the syllabus says 'lowest quiz dropped' or 'final replaces the midterm if higher', the plain weighted average is only an approximation — run both scenarios and keep the better one.

Planning the last weeks

Once the final's weight is known, the required score turns into a concrete study target. If the number comes back above 100%, the target grade is unreachable from the final alone and the realistic move is to check for extra credit or a dropped assignment instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if one category has no grade yet?
Leave it out. The calculator divides by the weights it is given, so the result projects the semester grade as if only the graded categories counted — which is exactly what a gradebook does mid-term.
Do weighted categories and points give the same answer?
They agree when weights match the point totals. If a course lists percentages, use weighted categories; if it lists total points, add the points instead. Mixing the two produces the most common calculation errors.
How much does the final exam change my grade?
Weight decides. A 15%-weighted final can only move the course grade by a few points either way, while a 50%-weighted final changes everything — the final-mode output shows the size of that lever immediately.
Can I include a dropped lowest score?
Model it by raising the affected category's grade to what it would be with the lowest score removed. The category average is the only number the weighting uses, so adjusting it is equivalent.
