How weighted grades work

Each category contributes (grade × weight). Sum the contributions and divide by the total weight. A 92% homework grade at 20% weight contributes 18.4 points; a 78% midterm at 25% contributes 19.5.

What is Weighted Grade Calculator?

A weighted grade gives each group of assignments a fixed share of the final mark. The grade for a group — the average of everything in it — is multiplied by its weight, the products are summed and the total is divided by the weights used. That last step is what lets the calculator work mid-semester: if only homework and quizzes have been graded so far, the denominator is 40% rather than 100%, and the result is a projection rather than a final figure. This is the standard model behind almost every syllabus percentage scheme and every learning management system gradebook.

Weighted average vs simple average

A simple average treats every item equally: one missed quiz counts the same as one missed exam. A weighted average encodes the teacher's judgement about what matters. When two students have identical raw marks but different weighted grades, the weights — not the arithmetic — explain the gap.

Finding the weights

Weights live in the syllabus, in the assignment description, or in the gradebook's category setup. If they are missing, a quick email settles it. Guessing weights produces a number that looks authoritative and is wrong, which is worse than a rough estimate you know to distrust.

Can weights total less than 100?
Yes, and mid-semester they usually do. Dividing by the weights actually used keeps the result on a percentage scale, which makes it comparable to a fully graded course.
What happens if weights total more than 100?
The result is still scaled correctly — a common case is bonus categories that push the total above 100%, or a typo. The calculator always reports the weight total so the discrepancy is visible rather than silently distorting the grade.
How do I weight by points instead?
Use the points as weights and the earned points as grades, keeping both on the same maximum. The ratio — and therefore the result — is identical.
Does the number of items in a category matter?
Not for the weighting — only the category average is used. That is the point of weighting: ten quizzes at 20% have the same influence as one exam at 20%, no matter how many there were.
